Radiation Oncology

Targeted radiation treatment for all ages

Our radiation oncologists work as part of a team of specialists using the latest technologies and treatment modalities to deliver the optimal radiation dose.

When we plan out a course of radiation, we tailor radiation treatments to each patient’s specific needs, taking into account all aspects of their disease and anatomy.

For some patients, treating with higher doses of radiation for shorter periods of time can decrease the need for surgery and chemotherapy. This method is targeted, accurate, and just as effective for the patient while minimizing possible harmful side effects. It is also more convenient for patients by limiting their trips to the clinic.

Our treatments and technologies

Volumetric Arc Therapy (VMAT) or RapidArc

This treatment delivers ultra-precise image-guided intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) two to eight times faster than traditional IMRT delivery methods in use at other Maine sites. This approach spares healthy tissue while effectively treating the tumor as the linear accelerator rotates around the patient.

Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) and Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) deliver large but precise radiation doses to small tumors and greatly reduce the number of treatment appointments for some patients. When clinically appropriate, these therapeutic programs spare healthy tissue while delivering our largest daily doses.

This technology maintains sub-millimeter precision during the treatment of brain tumors without the need for an invasive stereotactic head frame. Using a frameless mask has been shown to have levels of accuracy on par with the frame-based approach but with much less patient discomfort.

Significantly improves patient comfort when the patient receives a CT scan. The CT images are then used to tailor the treatment plan to the patient and ensure the radiation dose is delivered optimally.
