Surgical Weight Loss

Is Surgical Weight Loss Right for You?

Take our quick survey to help gauge your readiness to enter our life-changing program If you are struggling with weight loss, you are not alone. Recent studies show that more than 190 million Americans and 61% of Maine adults are obese or overweight.

Obesity goes much deeper than outward appearance; it affects every aspect of your well-being and can lead to other diseases such as heart disease, type II diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, and an increased risk of stroke.

Severe obesity is a chronic condition that is difficult to treat through diet and exercise alone. Managing your weight with the help of Northern Light Surgical Weight Loss means more than losing pounds, it means gaining the power to reshape your life. Together, we’ll work toward changing the way you look at food, decreasing your medication use, reducing your risk of obesity related diseases, increasing your energy, and improving the quality of the time you spend with your family and friends.

Weight loss surgery is sometimes the best option for people who are severely obese and cannot lose weight by traditional means or who suffer from serious obesity-related health problems. Bariatric surgery is a variety of procedures used to treat severe obesity. Through gastric band, gastric bypass, stomach surgery or other procedures, our surgeons will take care to ensure that you get the expert care you need and put you on the road to becoming a healthier you.

The surgery promotes weight loss by restricting food intake and, in some operations, interrupting the digestive process. The decision to undergo weight loss surgery cannot be taken lightly. While this procedure can be a tool for life-changing weight loss, it also requires your commitment to permanent lifestyle changes, including maintaining a proper diet and participating in regular exercise.

First Steps

1. Learn more about surgical weight loss  - We offer a free 20-minute online information session. Learn more about the commitment surgical weight loss requires and the unique resources our program provides for you.

2. Contact your primary care provider: Contacting your primary care provider creates an opportunity to discuss initial concerns, determine your body mass index, and obtain a referral to a surgical weight loss program

3. Contact your health insurance provider: You need to contact your health insurance provider to confirm weight loss surgery is a covered benefit under your plan. Make sure to ask if there are any specific criteria a surgical weight loss program must achieve in order to qualify under your plan. If your insurance does not cover weight loss surgery, you may contact our program for more information on self paying for surgery. Learn which health insurance providers give preferred status to our program.

4. Choose a surgical weight loss program that is right for you: Although there are many options, not all programs offer the same evaluation, surgical options, quality, and post surgery support. Learn more about what you need to ask when evaluating surgical weight loss programs.

Is your program accredited? What level of experience does your program offer? What types of weight loss surgery do you offer? What do you offer for pre and post surgery care?
