Stephen Davis recognized with DAISY Award

Presque Isle, Maine (April 5, 2023) — Steve Davis, RN, a nurse in Northern Light AR Gould Hospital’s Medical Surgical unit, was recently recognized for his outstanding patient care by being presented with a DAISY Award.

Davis was nominated by a patient who he cared for on the unit.

“When I met Davis, I was not in a good state.  I wasn’t nice.  However, he went above and beyond when I asked him not to, and he never complained.” explained the patient in their nomination.

The patient noted that Davis took time to mail letters that were sentimental to them. “Davis is the best of the best.  He was fun to be around and very down to earth. I will not forget him.”

This is a sentiment shared by many of his patients, co-workers, and friends, as he puts his care and compassion into action every day. In fact, Davis was recognized as the True North Shining Star for 2022, a top award for the entire Northern Light Health system, due to his innate desire to serve others.  Davis is leaving the area to be closer to his daughter and new grandchild, and he will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by those he has worked with and cared for.

During a surprise celebration, Davis was presented a daisy pin, a sculpture called A Healer’s Touch hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa, and a certificate commending him for being an “Extraordinary Nurse.” 

The DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Award is an international recognition program that honors and celebrates the skillful, compassionate care nurses provide every day. It was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died in 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), an auto-immune disease.  The care he and his family received from nurses inspired this means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.

Each quarter, AR Gould Hospital recognizes one of its nurses with the DAISY Award. These nurses are nominated by patients, family members of patients, co-workers, or community members for the outstanding care and compassion they provide.
