School of Medical Laboratory Science

Medical Laboratory Science is a profession that combines the challenges and rewards of medicine and science with the service to a healthy community.

Program Overview

As part of Northern Light Health's values that “supports research and education” and an ongoing “commitment to promoting a workforce”, Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center offers the School of Medical Laboratory Science (MLS).

The Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center School of Medical Laboratory Science was founded in 1946 to prepare graduates for professional work in laboratory medicine.

The 11-month training program results in a certificate in medical laboratory science from Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center while fulfilling requirements for the bachelor of science in Medical Laboratory Science from the University of Maine. Upon successful program completion, students are eligible to sit for the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) board of certification (BOC) examination.

The program typically fulfills the student's senior year of college (3+1 option), but applicants with a BS degree (4+1) who meet the entrance requirements will be considered. Eight students are accepted into the Medical Laboratory Scientist Program each year.

The philosophy of the program is to provide the student with didactic and clinical experiences required for working in a laboratory within a hospital, public health, private or industrial setting. Within the curriculum, the program provides exposure to the necessary experiences which lead to the development of competent practicing Medical Laboratory Scientists. Graduates will utilize critical thinking skills to identify problems, research knowledge relating to the problem, evaluate clinical situations and make decisions concerning solutions within the range of his/her educational and technical understanding.  In addition, because Medical Laboratory Scientists are placed in positions of leadership within the laboratory, the school also provides an introduction to developing supervisory and management skills. The broad technical and professional experiences will enable future employers to develop the student’s fullest potential as a working member of the laboratory and healthcare team.
