Investing in healthcare during COVID-19

Northern Light Health’s caregivers have been at the front lines of the COVID-19 response, treating people who are affected by the disease while continuing to care for patients who have other medical concerns. We’ve been touched by the incredible support we’ve received in the form of donations of personal protective equipment, supplies, food, and cash. It means so much to our caregivers to know that they have an entire community standing behind them.

We’ve heard from donors who want to stay up-to-date with how Northern Light Health is responding to COVID-19, and we’re always happy to provide an update. Many donors have also reached out to ask how they can help, and how COVID-19 has affected our needs, our patients’ needs, and opportunities for giving.

COVID-19 has changed giving

COVID-19 has caused many donors to reconsider their giving strategies. For some donors, this may mean postponing a gift to their charity of choice because their financial situation has changed. Others may direct their support to help immediately with the COVID-19 response or take extra time to plan future gifts that reflect their passions. Donors who are in a position to give today can take advantage of tax benefits when they support their local Northern Light Health hospital or home health organization.

There are tax benefits to giving

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act, also known as the CARES Act, has made it easier for donors to support their chosen charity. For example:

  • Individuals can now receive an above the line income tax deduction of up to 300 dollars

  • Businesses can now deduct up to 25% of taxable income

  • Individuals can deduct 100% of their adjusted gross income for the 2020 tax year

These changes ensure that from a tax perspective, giving will be even more beneficial for donors in 2020. And, these gifts can stretch further and make an even bigger difference. Contact Northern Light Health Foundation or your financial advisor to discuss how these changes may affect you.

Investing in healthcare is more meaningful than ever

While COVID-19 is on the top of everyone’s minds, Northern Light Health continues to care for patients and families who have other health concerns. Chemotherapy continues to be provided to cancer patients, babies are born every day, emergency surgeries are performed, and providers help patients manage chronic illnesses. Some donors may be inspired to give to support a particular interest. Donations made today will ensure that high quality care will be available to the most vulnerable in our communities long after the COVID-19 outbreak is over.

Meanwhile, some donors have chosen to support Northern Light Health’s COVID-19 Response Fund knowing that their gift will help caregivers and patients right away. Others may not be able to make a cash donation now but want to help however they can. Northern Light Health enthusiastically welcomes gifts of headbands made by local crafters, donations of personal protective equipment, and supplies.
