Why might I need a breast ultrasound?

Common reasons you might need a breast ultrasound (a procedure that uses sound waves to form pictures of the breast’s internal structures) include:

  • Diagnosing breast abnormalities, such as lumps or nipple discharge
  • Finding out more about a breast abnormality, such as if it’s solid or filled with fluid
  • As a supplement to mammograms to find breast cancer, such as if you have increased breast density that makes it harder for a mammogram to find lumps
  • To guide a biopsy (the removal of a small amount of tissue for testing) of a lump or other concerning tissue
