Northern Light Mercy Hospital launches online history
Dec. 12 marks 100 years serving greater Portland
Portland, Maine (Dec. 12, 2018)
– Today, Northern Light Mercy Hospital observed the 100 year anniversary of its founding by the Sisters of Mercy on December 12, 1918. As a way to share its history with the community, Mercy partnered with the Maine Historical Society (MHS) to launch an online history of the hospital on the Maine Memory Network
, a website that features historical essays, photos, and oral histories.
“From the founding of the hospital during the influenza pandemic of 1918 to today, our hospital’s journey and evolution is a story of healthcare, people, our community, and what’s at the heart of everything we do here—the work and vision of the Sisters of Mercy,” said Charlie Therrien, president of Mercy Hospital. “It’s been the steady leadership and focus shown by the Sisters of Mercy over the years that has helped this hospital adjust to the times and remain an indispensable place to receive compassionate, patient-centered care. I invite everyone to learn more about our rich history by visiting this fascinating online resource.”
