Neonatal Care

Through the years The Birthplace has welcomed many thousands of healthy babies into the world. Expectant couples feel secure knowing that at The Birthplace they will experience the best possible care for their baby and the personal touch that comes with one-on-one nursing care.

While the vast majority of babies are born healthy, some require an extra level of care and expertise when they are born. When that is the case, The Birthplace at Mercy offers Neonatal Care in our state-of-the-art Level II nursery, featuring specialized equipment including monitors, incubators, and oxygen.

We understand how important it is for mom and baby to stay together, especially if they are breastfeeding. If required, The Birthplace has a “boarding” room where mom can stay if she is discharged before her baby.

Conditions The Birthplace can treat in its Level II Neonatal Nursery include:

  • Premature babies born 36 weeks and up

  • Respiratory difficulties

  • Low blood sugar

  • Babies needing IV antibiotics and/or fluids

  • Jaundice requiring phototherapy

At The Birthplace we have a dedicated group of pediatricians with more than twenty years of clinical experience providing special care for your baby, if necessary. We are ready to take care of newborns with a wide variety of special needs, allowing mother and baby to stay in the same hospital rather than sending them to another hospital for specialty care.

The following pediatricians are members of the core Neonatal group:

  • James Foster, MD, Intermed Pediatrics

  • Russell Britton, MD, Greater Portland Pediatrics

  • Steven Blumenthal, MD, Greater Portland Pediatrics

The Birthplace also has a well-established relationship with the NICU transport team in the very rare instance that your newborn requires intensive care such as continuous life support or other comprehensive care for extremely high-risk newborn infants and those with complex and critical illness.
