Leaving a legacy of life – The importance of organ and tissue donation

Celebrated every April since 2003, National Donate Life Month is a time to recognize the generosity of those who have saved and enhanced lives by becoming organ and tissue donors and to honor the recipients of their selfless donations.

Just like with blood donors, the need for more tissue and organ donors is critical, as another person is added to the nation’s organ transplant waiting list every ten minutes.

What is organ and tissue donation and why is it so important?

By registering your decision to be an organ, eye, and tissue donor, you give hope to the more than 100,000 people in the United States currently waiting for lifesaving organ transplants. Thousands more people need tissue or corneal transplants to restore their health. One donor can save and heal more than 75 lives.

Transplant teams throughout New England work with New England Donor Services to connect donated organs and tissues with the people who need them. While Northern Light Health hospitals do not perform transplants, we actively support organ, tissue, and eye donation by connecting patients and families to New England Donor Services.

Who should consider donating – are there any age restrictions?

Any adult age 18 or older can register to be an organ, eye, and tissue donor – regardless of medical history. Children who are 15–17 years old can register their intent to be organ, eye, and tissue donors in the National Donate Life Registry. However, until they are 18 years old, a parent or legal guardian makes the final donation decision.

How can you become an organ donor?

You can register in the National Donate Life Registry at RegisterMe.org. You also can register for the state’s donate life registry when you are at the DMV. Both registries are checked by donation professionals at the time of a person’s death.

By becoming an organ and tissue donor you leave a legacy of life and hope to people who will be able to live full and wonderful lives thanks to you.
