How to use the one-minute preceptor

This five-step Microskills model, often known as the One Minute Preceptor, provides a framework for teaching in the office or emergency room. The structure encourages students to think critically about the case and gives insight into clinical reasoning skills. It also reminds preceptors to provide feedback on performance. Try using it after a learner has presented a case summary. All in only a minute! For further reference, please watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3qiyniSaNg

Using the RIME Method of Evaluation
The RIME model provides a framework and terminology for describing the professional growth of medical students. Students should use it to monitor their own progress and residents and faculty should use it to monitor student progress and to provide appropriate feedback.

How to flip your class
A pedagogical model in which the typical lecture and homework elements of a course are reversed. Content is reviewed by students at home before the class session, while in-class time is devoted to exercises, projects, or discussions. A major time saver!

How to configure the learning environment
Teaching in the clinical environment doesn't have to be a linear process. Dynamic engagement can be facilitated through intentional design in the configuration of the learning environment.

Educational theory in Medical Education
This presentation introduces different educational theories that can guide teaching practices with adult learners in the clinical environment. Practical guidance is derived from these theories to form actionable steps to improve the art and science of helping adults learn.

Curriculum design in medical education
Curriculum design does not need to be reserved for those in academia. In fact, clinical educators should be on the front lines of curriculum design, as they know what content is most available and understand the potential opportunities for integration of learning. This presentation covers the various curriculum models, elements, objectives, and curriculum maps; this is a great starting place for beginners or a quick refresh.

Problem based learning
Problem based learning is used in many medical schools worldwide. This presentation describes this method of learning and teaching in small groups and explains why it has had an important impact on medical education.

Faculty Appointment Information

UNE Faculty Appointments – all documents are submitted at the same time – once accepted the Faculty Appointment Letter will be sent out.The process for obtaining a Faculty Appointment through UNECOM is outlined below:

1. Appointment Application – Must be completed and signed by the faculty member requesting/nominated for appointment.

2. Current CV – Each faculty nomination must have a current CV. The current CV must show a specific category that references experience supporting an academic appointment, where the teaching activities(addendum) are outlined as to how and in what areas that the faculty member has taught students and/or residents.

3. Copy of Current State Medical License – Please make sure it is current and valid in the State in which the faculty appointee is teaching medical students and/or residents.

4. Nomination Letter – This should be a letter in support of the applicant’s nomination from a current UNECOM faculty member. It should state how the applicant interacts with UNE students as well as the quality of the nominee’s teaching abilities. It should be addressed to the Director of Faculty Development. (I will assist with this).

5. Copy of ABMS and/or AOA Board Certification (If you are not board certified or pending, that should be noted on the application)

I am more than happy to be of assistance through this process in routing documents to the appropriate individuals.
