Most pregnancies follow a very predictable course, but some require more attention to give moms and babies the best chance for a safe and happy delivery.

It is important for Northern Light Women's Health to provide services for those women whose pregnancies may be considered high-risk due to pregnancy related problems or special health conditions. For these mothers, prenatal care may include frequent visits with our special Maternal Fetal Medicine team.

The team includes clinical and support staff at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center, and the special skills of our own perinatologists whom have special training in high risk pregnancy management. These perinatologists are physically located in Portland, at Maine Medical Partners, and see patients via telemedicine. This technology allows us to leverage their expertise most efficiently for expectant mothers in Maine who are considered high risk. This team closely monitors the growth and development of the baby, as well as the health of the mother, and works with the mother’s obstetrician in Bangor to plan and manage her care.

The doctors and support team will work with each mother on her plan of care, answer any questions, discuss concerns, and provide education and emotional support to guide her through the high risk pregnancy. Services provided by the Maternal Fetal Medicine team include fetal heart rate monitoring and diabetes education, along with many diagnostic and laboratory tests and analysis.
