Unplugging
Wednesday, December 1, 2021
“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.”
Those are the words of a person who has been soundly humbled by life but who has stumbled and clawed her way back, so there’s true “
street cred” in that statement. Anne Lamott is soulfully authentic in the way humbled people can be, and funny – really funny. If I were able to force one person to spend the day with me, Anne Lamott would be right up there. She’s wise to the world and the ways of human beings, a preacher of radical self-care and kindness, and a writer of both fiction and non-fiction including many spiritually tilted books on navigating life. If you’d like to dip into a little of her wisdom and authenticity, you might enjoy this Sounds True podcast:
Anne Lamott: Radical Self-Care Changes Everything.*
Self-care is an ultimate unplugging, a way of coming back to ourself. When we do give a care for our self, everything does start working better as Anne Lamott has observed. Nonetheless, many people who are pulled in a dizzying number of directions probably see the words, “self-care” and immediately think, “Right, maybe in another lifetime.” We’ll leave the time vs. self-care dilemma for another day, but know that a lot of what Anne Lamott talks about in this podcast is about the radical act of becoming happy in who you are, a happiness that doesn’t take up any space on the calendar at all. I listened to this podcast twice so I’m extra happy with myself. 😊
Enjoy (being you) today!

*Sidenote: As I said, Anne is direct and authentic. On this podcast she jumps right into the middle of the fray with no preamble or warm-up, which momentarily even took me aback! But if what I have said interests you, I encourage you to stick with her. You won’t regret it.
